Some Interesting Facts About the Brain

Human brain is the most complex, let’s say, biological device. It contains hundreds of  billions of nerve cells.   The weight of newborn child’s brain is about 350 g and might grow up to 1400g during the lifespan. However the performance of the brain is much depending on the size of its surface area rather than its weight. That means genius people not necessarily have a heavy brain but more of wrinkled gray blobs. More than 75% of the weight of our” thinking organ” is  a water, 1% - salt, and the rest are organic substances such as carbs, lipids and proteins. Every one of us has as many neurons in his brain as many  stars in our galaxy . It’s very interesting that the rate of neuronal growth is 250,000 per minute during the very beginning of brain development.

To think our “watery” organ spends energy as much as  25w electric bulb. The brain uses 1/5 of the body energy, while having only about 1/50 of body weight. All our thinking and acting are based on information transferred as ionic currents between neuronal cells from different brain parts or between brain and body parts. This information travels by the speed of today’s fastest car (more than 250mph). Every day we can produce 70000 thoughts. Unfortunately they are not all positiveJ.

Brain Parts: Medulla Oblongata

Medulla oblongata is the inferior (lowest) part of the brain where it unites with spinal cord. This structure controls breath, heartbeat and regulates the diameter of blood vessels thereby adjusting blood flow and blood pressure.

The diaphragm and intercostal muscles are rhythmically stimulated by the nerve pulses coming from medulla oblongata.  The concentration of CO2 in the lung is monitored by medulla oblongata. If the level rises, the medulla responds by increasing the activity of the motor nerves that control the intercostal muscles and diaphragm.

The rate of respiration (oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production) varies with level of activity. Intense exercise may increase by more than 20 times the oxygen consumption. By increasing the rate and depth of breathing the adequate level of oxygen is provided to the cells. Thus the medulla oblongata controls very important functions in the body. Destruction of the medulla may cause an immediate death.

In fact sleep is an active and dinamic process because the brain is active while we sleep. Dream i also a part of sleep. Today's technologies allow researchers to observe the function of different brain regions during the sleep.

We know that the sleep impact on our life can be huge. What can be more beneficial for our health and overall fillings other than the good night sleep?
