Food , environment and neurotoxins

Food is a mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water. It also may contain vitamins and minerals. Usually food components have a vegetarian or animal origin. However there are many food supplements having artificial origin (sweeteners, colors, artificial flavoring components). During cultivation vegetarian food products may become contaminated with some chemicals being used as fertilizers or pesticides. Processing procedures such as cooking, frying, pasteurizing, etc. food may get additional harmful substances (coloring, artificial flavoring and preserving components). Thus our every day’s food potentially contains harmful chemicals-toxins.

Environment where we live day by day becomes more polluted. Every day tons of potentially dangerous for our health chemicals are being thrown into the rivers, lakes, seas and ocean basins. According to the statement of the National Research Council, about 70,000 chemicals in commercial use today have not been tested whether they have toxic effects. It is estimated that many diseases and the majority of all cancers are a direct result of toxins in our environment and food. Since we breathe, eat and drink, chemicals through our digestive system and lung continuously enter into our bloodstream. All the toxins which can pass through the blood brain barrier potentially can reach any and every cell in our body including neuronal cells.

Some of these substances have neurotoxic effects. Heavy metals - lead, mercury, cadmium and pesticides are the most dangerous part of environmental contamination and they all are neurotoxins. In case they are odorless and/or colorless it makes impossible their sensory detection. The symptoms of poisoning from environmental pollution may not be observable because of their gradually build-up. Neurotoxins act directly on neuronal and muscle cell membranes changing their functional activity. Since the nervous system is connected to the immune system, neurotoxins eventually affect our immune system. Thus, our thinking and feeling normally can be dramatically affected by exposure to toxins. Can we avoid this danger? In fact, we don’t have many options. Today the only remaining practical way is getting Organic Food. But how long?
