Brain Parts: Medulla Oblongata

The medulla oblongata is the inferior (lowest) part of the brain where the brain unites with the spinal cord. This structure controls breath, heartbeat and regulates the diameter of blood vessels thereby adjusting blood flow and blood pressure.

The diaphragm and intercostal muscles are rhythmically stimulated by the nerve pulses coming from medulla oblongata.  The concentration of CO2 in the lung is monitored by medulla oblongata. If the level rises, the medulla responds by increasing the activity of the motor nerves that control the intercostal muscles and diaphragm.

The rate of respiration (oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production) varies with level of activity. Intense exercise may increase by more than 20 times the oxygen consumption. By increasing the rate and depth of breathing the adequate level of oxygen is provided to the cells. Thus the medulla oblongata controls very important functions in the body. Destruction of the medulla may cause an immediate death.

Sleep

Sleep is a phisiological state when our body rests quiescently in convinient position disengaged from the invironment and unresponcive to regular stimuli. In fact sleep is an active and dinamic process because the brain is active while we sleep. Dream i also a part of sleep. Today's technologies allow researchers to observe the function of different brain regions during the sleep.

We know that the sleep impact on our life can be huge. What can be more beneficial for our health and overall fillings other than the good night sleep? Recurrent sleep deprivation may cause physical and psychological problems because our body doesn't get the complete restoration physically and mentally. Stress and Brain Activity

What Is Stress?
To be simple ,stress is a feeling like there are too many things to do but you have not  enough time and energy for that or you're not sure you can do that but you have to. The events that may induce stress (stressors) can be very different and cover a wide range of  situations . For instance it can be a physical danger, pain, an appointment, highway driving, all "first time" events, tests(physical or mental), overwork, relationship problems , not enough sleep etc. In response to stress some physiological changes occur in our  body and brain to meet the unknown or tough situation and  act adequately.

Body responds to stressors activating the nervous system by releasing into our bloodstream specific substances referred us hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. This hormones increase metabolism, blood pressure, heart and breathing rates enhancing our overall alertness, muscle tones, vision and body energy releasing more glucose by liver. Some people may get sweated when stressed. All this changes prepare our body to act quickly and effectively to meet and handle the stressful situation.

Reaction to the stress known as the stress response enhances our ability to perform well while under pressure. Usually nervous system quickly returns to its normal state, standing by to respond again when needed. However it can cause problems when stress response overreacts or fails to turn off. Especially when we are in long-term stressful situations like family problems, moving to a new neighborhood or job etc. Situations like these may keep our nervous system overactivated and continue to release extra stress hormones over and again. This can significantly lower our body's reserves and  weaken our immune system, and cause many health-related problems.
